DFabulous & rare „Galaxy“ seating group set, designed by Walter Pichler, produced by Svoboda Möbel, Austria. The set consists of two „Galaxy 1“ chairs, the „Galaxy 2“ coffee table and the later realized 2-seater.
In 1966, on the initiative of former MAK CEO Peter Noever, Austrian artist Walter Pichler designed a kind of Space Age landmark, the “Galaxy 1” aluminum chair and the „Galaxy 2“ coffee table. An unconventional piece of aluminum furniture that seemed to float above the ground, with large holes punched into the sides and back of the chair, remembering of lightweight aviation and racecar construction. The futuristic furniture caused an immediate sensation and was shown in the Austrian pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal, among other places.
More than 30 years after the original design, they produced a re-edition of the chair at the suggestion of Hans Hollein, where also this particular set is from. The artist created both models with the Austrian company Svoboda Büromöbel.
Pichler remained close to architecture and architects throughout his life. In the eyes of the artist, who saw no boundaries between architecture and sculpture, the chair is a sculpture that can be also used as a seating furniture.
